Kindergarten Visit (Religion-Advent)

Today we visited with one of the Kindergarten classes. We read a Christmas themed story to them called "Mooseltoe". As you will hear in our podcast, our visit with them served a few different purposes. As we move through the Advent season, we are doing our best to be aware of our thoughts, feelings, and actions and how they may affect the people around us.

The visit with the Kindergarten students started because of a class meeting we had a short while ago. We were talking about Advent and how we would be preparing for Jesus' birth. A staff member, who happens to work in Kindergarten, heard what we were talking about, came into our class, and joined us in discussion. It led her to reflect on her own actions which led to an invitation to join her class for a book reading.

Over the next two weeks of Advent we look forward to at least two more encounters with the Kindergarten class. Listen in to our thoughts/reflections to get a better understanding of the learning that is happening here.

Welcome to our Podcast/VLOG Site!

The idea to Podcast and VLOG our learning has been on the back burner for some time now (last two months) but today we made it a reality. During a Math activity (Geometry) I suggested that we share some of our learning and several students were very interested. Like me, they needed a bit of a push to just jump in and give it a try.

My hope is that the students will immerse themselves in this new way of reflecting on and sharing our learning. The plan is to use the GSuite for Education (Google Apps for Education) tools (e.g. Hangouts, YouTube, Blogger, GDrive) to record and share our learning and our wonders.

Today we recorded some of the work we did in Math, check it out and enjoy! As well, feel free to comment here or tweet us @g45sebstars!

The following information is about the inner workings of how the audio and video above were put together, how the blog site was created, and future considerations.

Work flow:
  • Google Hangout on Air via YouTube to capture audio/video
  • iPevo document camera set up and connected to classroom desktop to capture video
  • Mic attached to headset used to capture audio
  • After hangout is complete, class watched the video and talked about the accuracy of the information that was provided, corrections/deletions, reflect on the learning
  • Audio was taken from the YouTube video via https://www.onlinevideoconverter.com/video-converter
  • MP3 created from online video converter was downloaded and placed in Google Drive
  • Link for the Audio was acquired and sharing settings were changed to "anyone with the link can access"
  • MP3 sharing link from Google Drive was inserted in the blog post
  • Video was embeded from YouTube
  • Blog was created by logging into Blogger and simply creating a new blog site. Blog was named, theme was chosen, and an email subscription gadget was added.
  • Future considerations: students will write the text for the blog, students will play a greater role in the creation of the audio/video.
  • The name of the blog, "Mr. C's Suite Class Podcast/VLOG" is a play on the word "Sweet". It is a "Sweet" blog but because we will be using Google apps through Google's GSuite for Education we thought that we would change the word "Sweet" to Suite.
